CAFE "SACHER ECK"

HOTEL SACHER

The Cafe "Sacher Eck" belongs to the probably most famous hotel in Vienna, the "Hotel Sacher" and is located right at the corner of Kärntner- and Philharmonika street. It was opened in April 2003, may host up to 55 people and was designed for a younger target group. The Sacher Eck is attractive in it's light and airy atmosphere, with the high tables with bar chairs and an elegant bar. They serve small, light snacks from the Sacher kitchen, typical Austrian confections of pastry and, of course, the famous Sacher cake.

However, considering that we didn't expect much, although well knowing that "Sacher" is popular for its hotels and cafes, we even found ourselves a bit disappointed - the overdone service (e.g. you are led to your table), the forced young atmosphere (chill-out and pop music from the less talented artists), the prices (out of every world - a manufactured, pre-prepared small piece of the Sacher cake for 4,50 EUR, a cup of cappuccino for unbeatable 3,90 EUR and a Wiener Melange for "only" 3,50 EUR) and the concept (which made you feel like a tourist who orders something, gorges it and clear out again) don't go well together. In other words, the service is so quick that you feel as they would like to have the table free for the next guests as quick as possible.

We experienced it more as a tourist trap. But okay, we must admit that the Sacher cake tasted really good, and we finally end up with sending out some cakes to our friends.

SPARKY'S

Sparky's
Goldschmiedgasse 8
1010 Wien

"Sparky's" is an American-style, easy-going restaurant (bar & grill) with a comfortable atmosphere, a fancy and maybe a bit overdone design, located only some metres from to the St. Stephan cathedral. It offers the typical American and creolian kitchen with some exotic elements for good prices.

Steaks (Filet, Rib eye, Sirloin-Striploin, Primribs), Ribs & Wings (Texad red hot, Coraline honey, Combo); Buffalo and Sparky wings, breaded), Jambalaya (Conjita, Vegetarian and Fantasia), stuffed, baked potatos (Chicken, Pork, Asia, Shrimps and Vegetarian) or burgers in every combination.

The food is so-so, nothing special though. The service is quite impersonal and the dishes aren't prepared with a lot of effort. Anyway, if you're into typical American (fast) food and order something not too cheap (hamburger for example, as simple, dry and tasteless as it can get) you can expect a nice dinner.
